Happily Adopted!
Mason, YGRR #4418

Mason is a five-and-a-half year old red Golden boy. He had been lovingly cared for and understood a few basic commands. He was surrendered to YGRR due to a divorce situation and a new home daycare business, which left little time for Mason who was crated all day. His previous owner felt this unfair to Mason's quality of life and that of his sister Millie, who was also relinquished (see July's Happily Adopted page). Mason's previous owner said, "I hope Mason is placed in a home where someone can devote the time, energy, and patience he deserves and craves. I know he is an eager-to-please dog and will make a new family a wonderful companion."

Mason was brought to the YGRR veterinarian where he was found to be quite healthy. He was brought up-to-date on his vaccinations and tattooed before coming to Riverview. Mason quickly settled in and the staff found him responsive, easy to handle, and a clean resident. His new home would soon be found!

The Adoption Coordinator contacted a repeat adopter who proved to be the right match for Mason! For thirty years this special person has had one or more Golden Retrievers by her side. Mason's new mother has a tender spot for Goldens, understands the breed and is completely devoted to her dogs. She missed the unconditional companionship and love Golden Retrievers brought to her life. She was once again ready to welcome a loving, good-as-gold dog, who was good with cats, into her home. Mason now enjoys walking trails along a river, fields to chase tennis balls, and the undivided attention of a caring mistress!

Happily Adopted!
Roxy, YGRR #4408

Red Roxy is a sweet one-year-old Golden girl. Her previous owners called YGRR to relinquish their youngster because they did not have the time for the training and exercise Roxy required. As a result, Roxy chewed undesirable items and was not fully housetrained. She was left outdoors for extended periods of time. A family member's hospitalization and sense of desperation with problems they could not solve with Roxy lead them to bring her to their local animal humane society. The shelter called YGRR since their kennel was full and a transportation volunteer was quickly dispatched to pick up this Golden girl. Roxy was on her way!

Roxy was brought to the YGRR veterinarian where she was found to be in very good health. She was brought up-to-date on her vaccinations, tattooed, and treated for an ear infection. Roxy was then discharged to YGRR. When our sweet girl first arrived she was quite timid and was indeed not fully housetrained. With consistent handling, a nurturing environment, and of course time, Roxy gained more confidence and her lovely personality emerged! The staff found Roxy easy to handle and good with other dogs.

The Adoption Coordinator knew Roxy was going to be a great dog for a special family! New adopters who came highly recommended by the YGRR Home Visitor were called. The Home Visitor reported that this family had the experience, patience, and desire to own a rescue Golden and that any dog placed in this home "will live a charmed life." This family had lost their beloved Golden to cancer and was once again ready for a good-as-gold companion. Once they all met at the scheduled adoption appointment it was apparent Roxy was ready to be part of the family! She has now had some time to settle in to her new home. Her new, forever family loves her and thinks she's just great! Sweet Roxy enjoys structured days, time spent relaxing with her family, and playing fetch with the kids. Indeed a charming life for a very deserving Golden!

Happily Adopted!
Millie, YGRR #4419

Lovely Millie is a five-and-a-half year old blonde Golden girl. She had been lovinging cared for and understood a few basic and important commands. Millie was surrendered to YGRR due to a divorce situation and a new home daycare business, which left little time for Millie, who was crated all day. Her previous owner felt this unfair to Millie's quality of life and that of her brother Mason, who was also relinquished. Millie's previous owner said, "My hope for Millie is to have a new owner or family who loves her as much as we do and is able to show it by playing with her, taking her for walks, petting her a lot, giving her a happy home, and enjoying her for the smart, fun girl she is."

Millie was brought to the YGRR veterinarian where she was found to be quite healthy. She was brought up-to-date on her vaccinations, given a dentistry, and tattooed before making her way to Riverview. While residing with us, Millie was found to be an extremely nice dog. She was responsive, easy to handle, and very friendly with people! This sweet dog's forever home would soon be found!

In a very short time, Millie was placed on the Active Adoption List. A home that would best fit her needs was sought. New, devoted dog owners who came highly recommended by the YGRR Home Visitor were called. This loving couple had always had dogs in their lives and missed the unconditional companionship that former dogs brought their family. They were hoping to adopt a dog that would mesh with their lifestyle and liked people. These new adopters were asked to come meet Millie. All went well at the scheduled adoption appointment where a great match was made! Millie now looks forward to daily walks, playing in her fenced-in yard, and lots of quality attention and love. Millie has the fresh start her previous owner was hoping for!

Happily Adopted!
Hunter, YGRR #4371

Hunter is a large seven-year-old Golden. He was reluctantly surrendered to YGRR by his devoted owner after a new marriage and new home situation did not allow for adequate, quality time for his handsome boy. Hunter's previous owner wished only the best for his faithful friend. He said, "Hunter is and has always been a faithful, loving, and an active dog. He is very gentle." His former owner was very sad to say goodbye to his big boy!

Hunter was given a comprehensive examination by the YGRR veterinarian. He was tattooed and x-rayed. He was in good general health for a senior dog, but was overweight, was Lyme positive and found to have the start of degenerative joint disease. While at Riverview, Hunter was placed on a healthy diet to shed a few unwanted pounds and supplements were added to his diet. Hunter was a happy resident who quickly settled in at the kennel.

The Adoption Coordinator was looking for a loving, forever home situation for Hunter. Soon one was found! Hunter met his new adoptive mother at the scheduled adoption appointment where all went well! This dog-savvy adopter has a long history with dogs including the Golden Retriever breed. She has the time and attention to give a dog. Hunter has settled in to his new rural, countryside home. He loves his new mother and loyally follows her. Currently, Hunter enjoys daily walks socializing with his new Golden Retriever friends, vacations in Canada, and a life fit for a king. Hunter can continue to look forward to a life filled with the happiest of days.

Happily Adopted!
Ashley, YGRR #3896

Ashley is a dog who touched everyone at YGRR. She is a unique dog and her story is somewhat unusual. "Unusual" was the length of time Ashley stayed with us. She lived at Riverview for three years (yes, three!) and to date has every other dog beat with the title of "Dog in Residence."* Here's her story.

Ashley is a lovely seven-year-old Golden. She was surrendered to a local shelter when her original owner moved to an apartment with a "no dog" policy. The Animal Control Officer of that community called YGRR knowing we would find Ashley the most appropriate, loving, forever home. She was brought to the YGRR veterinarian where she was given a thorough examination. Ashley was spayed, tattooed, and brought up-to-date on her vaccinations.

When Ashley came to Riverview three years ago she was a high energy dog, uptight and difficult to read. She could be a bit timid with new people and pulled on the leash when walked. However, through consistent handling, structure, and of course time, Ashley relaxed. The staff found her to be a real pleasure and easy to handle. She was a fun dog to walk and a clean and uncomplicated resident. Ashley truly loved people! She had all the ingredients of a really good dog! What did not change were Ashley's energy level and the need to be actively and constructively engaged. Her very favorite activity at Riverview was swimming in the pool and it was always fun for everyone to watch her having such a great time!

Ashley's "joie de vivre" and witty personality made her a bit more complicated to place. For example, Ashley was known to literally chase squirrels up trees and then get stuck. She also had an affinity for fine vases and lamps and would sometimes break these finer pieces while admiring! Ashley needed a truly one-of-a-kind person and unique home arrangement. The Adoption Coordinator was looking for that special someone to match Ashley's joy of life. It took some time, but Ashley's forever father was found! Indeed, it is a truly great match! Her new owner has flexibility in his schedule that allows for constructive time for Ashley. She now enjoys a varied life with new and exciting experiences. She loves keeping physically fit, taking midday restful naps snoring under her owner's desk, and cruising on the back of his boat, sunning herself on warm, sun-drenched days. Recently, Ashley's new dad wrote saying, "Ashley is doing GREAT. I love this dog. She is my best buddy. Ashley is very loyal and always near me." All the best to Ashley and her forever father!

*Permanent home placement is very important at YGRR. We know the emotional and psychological impact that happens for each Golden Retriever and adoptive family in the placement process. We take home selection seriously as a lifelong relationship. In Ashley's case, placement just took a bit longer than normal!
