Happily Adopted! |
Lili, YGRR #4495 |
Three-year-old Lili was named after Liliuokalani, Hawaii's last queen. Her original owner was a woman who devoted her personal life to her Golden Retrievers and had fallen in love with Hawaii while vacationing there. Unfortunately, she fell ill with leukemia just before Lili's first birthday. Upon her passing, she willed Lili and her mother, Emma, to a work colleague. After caring for daughter and mother for almost a year, Lili's caregiver felt her large family could not adequately give "the girls" the time they desperately deserved. During that time Lili lived with three children, a Boxer, and a Pug. Lili's caregiver called YGRR to surrender these special girls knowing we would find just the right home.
Lili was admitted into the program and brought to the YGRR veterinarian where she received a thorough examination. Lili was in excellent health and simply needed to be brought up-to-date on her vaccinations and tattooed. While at Riverview this gentle, reserved girl quickly settled in with her consistent surroundings. The staff found Lili to be a sweet Golden who was enjoyed the company of other dogs.
It didn't take long for Lili to be matched with her new forever family. New adopters were called who had always loved dogs and wanted to adopt a rescue Golden. Their active lifestyle now provides Lili with lots of exercise and Lili now has a new, good-as-gold sister, Belle. The two dogs get along fabulously! Lili's former owners can have peace of mind that she is in an exceptional home where she will be given a lifetime of attention and love. |

Lucy, YGRR #4483 |
YGRR has always had a strong commitment to senior dogs. Our very first rescue dog was, in fact, a senior boy. As is our mission, we continue to serve Goldens of all ages, but standing in amongst them all will be smiling seniors. Lucy's is such a story.
YGRR received a call from the MSPCA asking for assistance with an olderGolden girl. Ten-year-old Lucy had been turned over to a shelter by her owner because her landlord would no longer allow her to keep a dog in the apartment. The staff was concerned that Lucy seemed depressed and immediately called YGRR.
Lucy was admitted into the program and taken to the YGRR veterinarian. Upon examination a mammary tumor was found and subsequently completely excised.
There was no evidence of invasion or metastasis. She was also given a complete geriatric workup, was brought up-to-date on her vaccinations and tattooed. Lucy came to Riverview where she had time to rest, recuperate, and wait for just the right home. It was a pleasure to be in the company of this gentle soul who loved people and other dogs!
Sure enough Lucy found the perfect home! Retired, repeat adopters (Spencer, YGRR# 1171) who had recently lost their older girl were ready for another senior Golden. This couple has had more than fifty years of Golden experience and know-how. When they met Lucy they knew she was worth the wait! Lucy was just the right fit for their retired lifestyle. Recently Lucy's owners called to say, "It's like she's been with us forever!" At any given time, Lucy can be found snuggled up her dog bed, delighting in endless belly rubs, or taking a leisurely walk with her adopters. Lucy shares her life with her new family by living the Golden Retriever example: to love unreservedly and without judgment to the very end. Lucy's big smile is now seen by all! |

Ranger, YGRR #4491 |
It is hard to believe that three-year-old Ranger was recently a stray in danger wandering the streets of a New England city. This homeless, blonde boy was found by a caring Animal Control Officer. Although Ranger was held for a month, no one came forward to claim him. The Animal Control Officer called YGRR knowing we would place him in a home where he would be receive the proper care.
Ranger was brought to the YGRR veterinarian where he passed his exam with flying colors! While there, he was neutered and tattooed. Ranger then made his way to Riverview and settled into the kennel. The staff quickly noted Ranger was a pleasure to handle and he got along very well with other dogs.
Repeat adopters of Bruno (YGRR, #3933) had lost their faithful Golden friend to cancer and were once again ready to adopt. YGRR had just the Golden boy for them! A perfect match was made when this special couple was invited to meet happy-go-lucky Ranger. His new owners immediately recognized what a sweet and gentle Golden he was. He now has a wonderful, forever home and is given lots of time and love. Ranger spends busy and interesting days at the marina with his new, devoted dad, takes invigorating walks along the water's edge, and has the comfort and security of a fenced in yard! |

Clifford (Barley), YGRR #4446 |
2008 is certainly going to be a healthy, new start for our big-red-dog Clifford! Four-and-a-half-year-old Clifford was surrendered in June after being tragically hit by a car. His elderly owners brought him to their veterinarian, but called YGRR reporting they could not afford his surgery or manage his rehabilitation. Our kennel manager drove to a neighboring state, picked Clifford up at the vet hospital, and took him to one of the finest, Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston. Upon examination Clifford was found to have a fracture of his left tarsus. He had a fracture to the tiny bone that holds the foot to the ankle and unless it was stabilized and healed, his leg would have to be amputated. Clifford was to have a long road ahead of him
that included a serious surgery and time dependent healing.
The surgeons repaired his fracture and, after his hospital stay, Clifford was discharged with strict recuperation instructions that included absolute quiet rest and hand walking for bathroom purposes only. This twelve week plan was to ensure Clifford's complete recovery! His recuperation plan was implemented and he was monitored closely by YGRR staff during this lengthy rehabilitation. At the conclusion of this period Clifford had a post-op follow-up examination. His exam and x-ray showed the big red boy had made a full recovery!
The kennel staff found Clifford may have been broken in body, but certainly not in spirit! Now this wonderful dog could be placed in a permanent home situation. A retired naval officer proved to be Clifford's match. He understood Clifford was going to need a gentle touch and would need time as he continued to recondition and get back into shape. Clifford is now known as "Barley." Barley now enjoys life at the Cape and his quiet surroundings. He and his doting dad enjoy walks, playing ball, and their constant companionship. A great start for Barley as the New Year unfolds! |
