Message from our President, 2006 |

Throughout the years I have been involved in many discussions and meetings concerning the path that Yankee Golden Retriever Rescue should take in accomplishing its goals. As in any undertaking there have been many diverse opinions. Once decisions were made it was not unusual for an unexpected challenge to appear. Working together the officers, directors, staff and volunteers overcame these obstacles and moved forward. In the early years YGRR was a "foster home" based humane organization. With an ever increasing call for our services the need for our own kennel became paramount. Following an extensive Capital Campaign, Riverview was built. This provided us with a state-of-the-art kennel, education and training facility. Once we had a permanent home we were able to focus more on further developing our programs. Communication with law enforcement, veterinarians and other animal care professionals created awareness of resources that would help in caring for and placing unwanted dogs. Networking with varied veterinary facilities provided us with the resources for treating a myriad of medical problems. The introduction of training classes for adopted dogs gave new owners insight into their animal's behavior. Special programs designed for senior dogs (see Message from our Co-Directors) created a safety net for those willing to adopt these elders. With each passing year we saw an ever increasing number of older Goldens being turned into our program. Once they waited and waited to be adopted, now they are eagerly sought out. While we tend to focus mainly on our own organization we have all been keenly aware of the many situations and problems that have arisen in the world regarding the plight of domestic animals. Many seem far away, yet they all touch us personally sooner or later. Situations such as cruelty, the plight of animals during natural disasters and the moving of animals from one location to another without regard for health and safety concerns have all made headlines. In the coming years there will most likely be an ever increasing number of laws designed to deal with these problems. In the meantime, humane organizations need to be diligent. On the positive side, the amazing strides being made in veterinary medicine are increasing the longevity of many animals. Diseases and physical injuries once thought fatal are being successfully treated. With new sophisticated treatments come the need for equally sophisticated methods of rehabilitation. These past 20 years have been very special to all of us at YGRR. With the support of our members and donors we have successfully provided services to over 4,000 Goldens in need. We look forward to many more years of fulfilling our mission to support these wonderful creatures. With dedication and determination we can make it a reality. Thank you all! |
