Who knows under what name he began his life? We first heard about him when a member told us that a thin eight or nine-year-old Golden male with hookworm was scheduled to be euthanized at a pound the next day. The date was April 23, 1985 and YGRR was not yet officially ready.

Nonetheless, seven members swung into action. After receiving the call, Co-Founder Joan Puglia called the pound at the eleventh hour and arranged for the pick up of "Ralph Rescue" as he had been dubbed. The dog was taken a veterinary hospital where a member coordinated his care. After receiving all his immunizations, being tested for heartworm disease (negative) and neutered, a volunteer drove Ralph to a foster home. Ralph’s foster mom cared for the new arrival for only a couple of days before he was adopted by the veterinarian's mother-in-law who renamed him Charlie. YGRR's first adoption was complete!

Thus, one week after he was scheduled to be euthanized, Charlie was in his new home, had made friends with the resident cat, lost his over-anxious manner, and showed his new owner his wonderful Golden personality. It was clear that someone had once spent time with this dog because Charlie knew several commands - sit, down, stay, heel, shake, roll over - and yes, he knew how to beg! He became the perfect companion for a seventy-year-old woman who had recently lost her husband and her thirteen-year-old dog. Charlie lived a long, happy life with his new owner and YGRR was born!
