Because the dog relies very little on taste to accept or reject food, the dog is one of the easiest of all animals to poison. A toxic substance with no odor may be gulped down regardless of how it tastes. Hundreds of dogs die annually from eating caustics thrown carelessly into the garbage. Up to 40% of all pet poisonings are preventable, but it does take some precautions and awareness. A list of common household poisons and plants is available in the YGRR calendar. A comprehensive list of poisonous plants may be found on the web at: www.abc.cornell.edu/plants
Symptoms of poison by ingestion include pain, nausea, vomiting and/or
collapse. If you suspect that your dog has been poisoned, contact your
veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately. The Animal Poison Control
Hotline at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine can be
reached at: (800) 548-2423 or (900) 680-0000.
This information is made available to you by the efforts of YGRR volunteers. To join them in helping our homeless Goldens, please consider becoming a member or making a donation. Thank you. |
